Learn about the Process of Dental Implants

Keeps Jaw Healthy

Dental implants have the unique ability to stimulate, preserve, and protect your jaw bone. This preserves your appearance and the strength of your jaw.

Lasts 30+ Years

Dental implants last longer than any other type of replacement tooth. In fact, your implant will last for the rest of your life with proper care.

Looks & Feels Natural

Implants are built to anchor tightly to your natural jaw bone, and will look and feel natural when you smile, bite, chew, and more.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small, screw-shaped rod of titanium that is implanted into your jaw bone. This rod acts as an artificial tooth root and can support a single crown to replace one tooth. ‍

Two implants can also be used to support a dental bridge, or a series of 4-6 implants can be used to support a set of implant-supported dentures. Implants are permanent, long-lasting, and durable, and the best way to replace missing teeth.

The Implant Placement Process

We refer our patients to an experienced oral surgeon for this step. Your oral surgeon will develop a custom treatment plan through x-rays and digital imaging, and then place your implant. They will create an opening in the gums and jaw, and place the implant in the proper location. Then, the area will be stitched shut and cleaned, and you’ll be sent home to heal.

The Implant Healing Process

It takes about 2 weeks to heal from the initial placement process, but it will take 3-6 months for your implant to permanently bond to the jaw tissue. You’ll come to our office several times for follow-up appointments to check on your progress.

The Implant Restoration Process

As your mouth heals, Dr. Enzweiler will begin taking images and impressions of your teeth to build your implant restoration, such as a dental crown to replace one tooth, or a dental bridge to replace multiple missing teeth.

Once your mouth is fully healed and your restoration has been built, you will schedule your final appointment at our office, and Dr. Enzweiler will place your restoration and provide you with instructions on how to care for your smile.

Implant Maintenance & Aftercare

Single-tooth implants do not require any special care, and you can brush and floss normally. If you have an implant-supported bridge or denture, though, you may need to follow some special care instructions, such as cleaning below the prosthetic with a Waterpik and using an interdental brush to remove any food particles after eating. Dr. Enzweiler will provide you with a full set of care instructions for your new smile.

Sedation Available

We offer nitrous sedation sedation, which can help keep you feeling safe and comfortable throughout your appointments at our office. For more information, just ask about sedation when you schedule a consultation at Vivid Dentistry.
